Core Knowledge Foundation
| Core Knowledge
Foundation is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan organization
founded in 1986 by E. D. Hirsch, Jr., professor emeritus at the
University of Virginia and author of many acclaimed books including
Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know and The Schools We
Need and Why We Don't Have Them. The Foundation conducts research on
curricula, develops books and other materials for parents and teachers,
offers workshops for teachers, and serves as the hub of a growing
network of Core Knowledge schools. Core Knowledge needed a computer application through which its enormous volume of instructional materials and unit plans could be stored and organized so as to be more easily available to teachers. MediaOrange worked with Core Knowledge staff over a 6 month period to develop a stand-alone application which housed an entire year of instructional units and resources. A complete 180 day instructional sequence is clearly laid out. Teachers can view the lesson plans from a daily, weekly, or even yearlong perspective. The actual unit plans are available in Adobe Acrobat format and can be accessed through hyperlinks from within the database. This information had previously been available in paper format but it was extremely difficult and confusing to sort through the stacks of paper. Having the information available in electronic form now allows teachers to easily navigate through the daily and weekly plans to locate the resources they need. Also, since the printed reports are now generated through a database rather than manually created, changes and editions can be done quickly and efficiently. |
